Inside our culture with Nic & Mitch White
Hear directly from the people who work here.
When our teammates talk about working with Nic and Mitch, they talk about everyday conversations, hands-on involvement, and recognition for the effort they put in.
One colleague describes how being recognized and mentored made them want to keep improving. Another talks about company meetings that help people understand what’s changing and where the business is going.
Know what you’re contributing to. Take responsibility for your work. Feel that your effort matters.
Recruitment, probation and bootcamp are all paid at your starting wage. Nobody trains for free here.
After probation you go to bootcamp for six to twelve weeks at our Chatham headquarters. You learn how Handy Bros does the work: the POD, the checklist, the walkthrough. Graduates usually see a raise once they’ve earned their certificate and proven it in the field.
Want your 308A or 313A? Once you’re with us, we enrol you in the apprenticeship right away. Your hours are logged and tracked, and when you hit the requirement we send you to your school blocks. Tuition is minimal, you go on EI during blocks, and you usually come back to a raise. We want our team licensed as fast as possible.
WHMIS and safety training are done in-house. How we work changes, sometimes fast. If you like finding a better way and you’re not precious about how you’ve always done it, you’ll fit here.
Andrew Russell, a service technician on our team, on enjoying new challenges and wanting to help train the people who come after him.
Four days. Monday to Thursday, with Fridays kept for emergencies. Days start at 6 am and usually wrap around 5:30 pm, so a normal week runs 40 to 50 hours. Peak season, June, July and November, goes to five days and can reach 60. Saturdays are emergency on-call only, and each crew takes a turn about once every month or two.
Install crews of two or three handle one full system a day, or two single-piece jobs. Service technicians run their own calls: diagnostics, repairs and maintenance. Volume is steady year-round, and slower stretches go to training.
The POD. Before you arrive, the equipment, fittings and materials for the job are pulled, staged and loaded together. You spend your morning installing, not hunting for a fitting.
The last 5%. The wrap on the lineset, the level on the pad, the clean floor, the walkthrough with the homeowner. That’s the part the family remembers for years. We hire people who would do it anyway.
Equipment and supplies prepared for an installation in a Handy Bros. vehicle.
Own it. A wrong fitting, a scratched wall, a missed step: say so, fix it, move on. Nobody here gets thrown under the van for an honest mistake.
Improve it. From how vans are loaded to how the phone gets answered, we keep asking whether there’s a better way. Our aim is to leave the home comfort trade better than we found it.
Enjoy who you work with. The people beside you decide how a hard day feels. We want a crew that likes the craft, treats people well, and covers for each other when a job runs long.
Prepare carefully. Keep building your skills. Think about the years a family will spend living with your work. That’s what a bigger purpose looks like on a Tuesday at 6 am.

Tuition is minimal and you cover it. You go on EI during school blocks and usually come back to a pay increase.
You need to be able to drive yourself to the job, and crew leads need a full G. We insure our drivers, so a clean record matters.

Someone on the hiring team reads it and gets back to you. If it’s a fit, we set up a call, then a visit to meet the crew.
