Bentley’s Project: A Christmas Promise That Changed Life at Home

Amanda and Jeff guide Bentley through a widened doorway during the reveal of the renovated home.

A Christmas visit began with a simple promise: “We’re going to take care of everything.” What followed was one of the most ambitious Handy Bros. Heroes projects to date—a home rebuilt around Bentley’s safety, dignity, and future.

This is the story behind all three chapters of Bentley’s Project: how one referral became a community-wide commitment, how a renovation team worked inside an unforgiving timeline, and how the finished space changed the rhythm of care for one family.

The call no one could ignore

Bentley’s story first reached Handy Bros. Heroes through an educational assistant at his school. She had seen a fundraiser shared online and knew a family that genuinely needed help. More importantly, she understood that the need was bigger than a single expense. It was built into the family’s everyday environment.

A visit to the home made that clear. Bentley lives with MECP2 duplication syndrome, a rare and progressive neurological condition. In the first video, Amanda explains that Bentley had lost abilities over time and was experiencing frequent seizures despite medication. He could no longer bear weight, and the wheelchair he relied on could not pass through most of the home’s doorways.

That meant Amanda and Jeff were not simply helping Bentley move. They were repeatedly lifting and carrying a growing child from room to room, chair to chair, and into a traditional bathroom that had never been designed for his care. The work was physical, constant, and emotionally exhausting.

The team arrived at the family’s door in Santa hats and delivered the news. Amanda’s reaction moved between laughter, tears, and disbelief. She called it life-changing because it was not about receiving a nicer room. It was about making care safer and helping Bentley remain at home with the people who love him.

What the home had to solve

  • Doorways that were too narrow for Bentley’s wheelchair.
  • A three-piece bathroom that could not support accessible bathing or changing.
  • Repeated manual transfers that placed a growing physical burden on Bentley and his caregivers.
  • No safe, continuous route between Bentley’s bedroom and the bathroom.

Turning a promise into a plan

The original idea quickly expanded. This would require more than widening a single door. The team planned to combine the existing bathroom and laundry area into one fully waterproof wet room; widen the openings to Bentley’s bedroom, bathroom, and his parents’ room; relocate the laundry; reinforce the ceiling; and prepare a track that could carry Bentley safely between spaces.

The room also needed an adult-sized powered change table, a roll-in shower arrangement, multiple shower heads, heated flooring, and enough clear space for Bentley, his caregivers, and his equipment. Every decision had to work for the family on an ordinary Tuesday—not only look impressive on reveal day.

Then came the clock. The family’s planned time away created a narrow window to open the house, complete structural and plumbing work, rebuild the spaces, and put everything back together before they returned. The first chapter set an audacious seven-day target; the later retrospective describes the full renovation window as ten days. Either way, it required people working in parallel and refusing to treat “good enough” as the finish line.

Part 2 shows how wide the circle became. Electricians, painters, plumbers, tile and flooring teams, drywall crews, suppliers, waste services, an accommodation partner, medical-equipment specialists, volunteers, and Handy Bros. team members all contributed labour, materials, expertise, or funding. The project cost more and demanded more than first expected. The community kept stepping forward.

The reveal was not about finishes

When the family came home, the first proof was movement. Bentley could enter the reconfigured hallway and pass through the widened openings in his wheelchair. His bedroom door now aligned with the bathroom route. The laundry had a new home. And where a small bathroom and laundry room had once stood, there was now a spacious, fully waterproof room built around his care.

“Our quality of life is going to change so much for the better.”

The equipment installation would follow the building work, but the architecture was ready for it: reinforced ceilings, a continuous track route, clear turning space, and a room sized for the powered table and lift. The reveal was the moment a promise became visible. The real test would come after the cameras left.

Two months later, the real story was daily life

When the team returned two months after the equipment was installed, Amanda said she still felt shocked walking into the bathroom. The difference was now measured in repetition: every transfer the lift could handle, every doorway the wheelchair could clear, every bath and change that could happen without first forcing Bentley through an unsafe sequence of manual lifts.

Amanda uses the new ceiling-track lift to transfer Bentley safely in the family’s living space.
two months later the ceiling track lift was carrying the physical load that had once fallen entirely on bentleys caregivers

The ceiling-track system could lift Bentley from a chair and move him through the home. His wheelchair now fit through every widened doorway. The powered change table could raise or lower for Amanda or a nurse, reducing strain on different caregivers. In the wet room, the lift and slings could carry him directly to the shower area. Multiple shower heads, heated floors, and the warm, steam-like environment added comfort when he was congested or unwell.

Amanda described the change as a literal and figurative weight lifted from the family. More than that, it answered the fear beneath the original referral: whether the home could continue to support Bentley as he grew.

“We’re able to keep him in our home forever and care for him into adulthood.”

Amanda, Part 3

What changed every day

  • Movement: Bentley’s wheelchair can travel through the widened doorways without repeated transfers.
  • Safety: The ceiling-track lift carries the physical load during transfers.
  • Care: The powered change table and open wet room support safer routines for family and nursing caregivers.
  • Comfort: Heated floors, adaptable equipment, and a warm shower space make difficult days gentler.
  • Future: The home can support Bentley’s needs as he continues into adulthood.

What Bentley’s Project says about community

Bentley’s Project was never the work of one person, one trade, or one company. It happened because someone at a school noticed a need, a family trusted people with its story, dozens of contributors offered what they could, and a community chose to turn compassion into something practical.

That is the purpose of Handy Bros. Heroes: to use the skills, relationships, and resources built through everyday work to create lasting change for people facing extraordinary circumstances. The best measure of this project is not the size of the renovation. It is the ordinary moments that are now safer, easier, and more dignified for Bentley and the people who care for him.
